Four days offline: lessons from the canoe

Last week, we set off on our very first family canoe trip: four days and three nights in Algonquin Park with my brother, sister in law and their youngest. It turned out to be one of the most amazing—and most challenging—experiences we’ve ever shared.

At 41, I discovered I’m still stronger than I realize (and so are my kids!). I personally portaged 1,200 metres carrying both a 50 lb pack and the canoe. One especially cold night, Sam and I ended up squished into a single sleeping bag after I underestimated the weather. Turns out, being completely squished is better than being freezing cold.

Four days without cell phone reception might be the best gift I’ve received in years: no screens, no distractions—just time to really connect. Long conversations around the fire that my brother and Zorik sawed and chopped wood to build, and watching the kids run wild in the woods with their cousin. I can’t wait to do it again next year (and yes, I’ll come better prepared!).
