Rooted in Motion: Building Resilience in a World That Won't Stand Still

Join Simone on the Ecuadorian coast for a week of building resilience in a world that won’t stand still. This retreat is about stepping fully into the gift of living a human life. To engage with the world from an open heart and mind and to take nothing for granted. Each day, we’ll explore different aspects of what it means to be in an ever-changing human body amidst a world that feels chaotic and unforgiving.

To be human is a tremendous gift.

Consider all the incredible events that had to occur for you to be here – how the stars aligned at the moment of your birth. Being human is the greatest gift we can receive.

This retreat is about learning to celebrate each moment. Even in the painful moments, we are still alive. We still have power. We can still choose how we show up.

“Today is going to be the best day of my life” is not naïve optimism – it is a mindset we can learn to adopt. This is the only day we actually have. Life is precious, and time passes quickly.

This retreat in Ecuador is an invitation to remember that.

Together, we will cultivate the tools to recognize when you are caught in a victim mindset and gently shift from “Why is this happening to me?” to a powerful choice:

I choose this life.
I choose to show up.
I choose to be present.

When we decide that today matters – that today is the best day of our lives – we move forward with greater resilience and a renewed sense of purpose.

Even in the doldrums of everyday life; (the laundry, the dirty dishes, the cooking, the caring for others), we can meet each task with mindfulness, love, compassion, and presence.

If this were the last time I ever folded the laundry, I would want to feel the fabric in my hands. To smell the clean clothes. To lovingly care for them so those I fold for can feel the care I brought to the task – so my love is carried forward.

We do not know when it will be the last time we snuggle our children, hold someone’s hand, or walk in the forest.

So we wake up.

We wake up to the everyday beauty that surrounds us. We wake up to the privilege of being alive. Even when life feels hard or painful, there is always beauty.

We simply need to open our eyes and see it.

This retreat is a space to practice seeing.
To practice choosing.
To practice living fully – in this one precious life.

On Ecuador’s wild Pacific coast, the jungle meets the ocean and the tides shape the shoreline each day. We’ll explore and deepen our understanding of what it means to be human. We’ll deepen our humanity by exploring being with the challenges, the joys and the pain of human existence. Impermanence is a reality that can deepen our experience of the moment or cause us great suffering.

This retreat is a celebration of impermanence and the beauty that it can bring into our lives. Holding the space for ourselves to be as we are, ever changing, evolving, and growing.

At Vistamar in Ayampe — surrounded by expansive beaches, lush jungle trails, warm ocean water, and endless sunsets — we will immerse ourselves in the living rhythm of change. Nature here does not resist its own becoming. The tides rise and fall. The forest grows and sheds. The sky transforms from brilliant blue to shades of pink, purple, and gold each evening.

This retreat invites you to learn how to do the same.

Local Jungle Hike Description

A 3-mile loop starting directly from Vistamar and heading into the mountains behind Ayampe. Elevation gain/loss is minimal (about 500 ft max throughout the entire hike). Depending on river levels, we may complete a full loop and return alongside the river. We provide boots and at least two English-speaking guides. This is a beautiful setting to observe flora and many birds.

Boat trip and Snorkelling Description

We drive about 20 minutes to board a 60-ft boat with three outboard motors, a tower, and a front lounging area. The boat is coast-guard certified and fully compliant with safety regulations, with a captain, first mate, park guide/naturalist, and 2–3 English-speaking guides. The trip lasts about 3-4 hours total and includes visits to secluded beaches and snorkeling (all gear provided).

Los Frailes National Park Hike Description

We take a scenic drive 30 minutes up the coast to the park entrance.  We then 'hike"‘ or walk (depending on your definition of hike) 1.5 miles and a maximum of 300 vertical meters at a leisurely pace through a Palo Santo forest, passing three beautiful and very distinct coves where we will stop to swim.  We will also stop at an awesome lookout tower.  The entire trek is a bit more challenging than the jungle hike because we will be much more exposed to the sun.  Light, long-sleeved shirts and hats are highly recommended.  Where the trail ends, the cars will be waiting for us with dry clothing.  There are also showers and ice cream.  From there, we will stop on the way back at a Palo Santo factory where folks can buy all sorts of Palo Santo products.

Rio Chico Beach Hike Description
We drive about 8 minutes north to a scenic cove, then walk 10 minutes along the beach to flat lava-rock formations. We explore the rocks and tidal pools while enjoying the views. There is some light scrambling—occasionally using hands to navigate 4–5 ft height changes—but no technical skills are required. The guides will be very attentive and assist anyone who needs help.

Optional Activities During Free Time:

  • Surf Lessons

  • Massages and Bodywork (at an extra cost)

  • Ice bath/Cold Water Immersion

  • Tidal Pool Lava Rock Hike

  • Relax on the Beach

  • Take a short walk into Ayampe

The Body as a Living Teacher

Change often appears in the body before the mind can fully understand it. As we age, as we heal, as we adapt, the body continuously evolves. Instead of fighting this natural process, we will explore how to be with our bodies as they are — responsive, intelligent, and worthy of care.

Our practices will include:

  • Dharma talks to frame the day and deepen our understanding of the practice.

  • Meditation grounded in Yoga and Buddhist philosophy and modern psychology and embodied presence.

  • Dynamic morning movement overlooking the ocean.

  • Sanskrit chanting to get us out of our heads and into our hearts.

  • Introspective afternoon sessions to deepen awareness of ourselves, the world, and our place in it.

  • Guided reflection and journalling on identity and impermanence.

  • Yoga Nidra to take us on journeys beyond what we think is possible and leave us feeling deeply nourished.

  • Time in nature – beach walks, jungle hikes, snorkelling, and sunset stillness.

  • Yin Yoga to allow the body to soften into sensation and let go of our resistance.

  • Long savasanas to allow our nervous systems to integrate the deep work we’re doing and help us navigate the bumps of living a human life.

The ocean becomes our mirror. The jungle, our teacher. The horizon, a reminder of vastness.

How to Get There

Getting to Ayampe is easier than you might think. From Toronto and other major North American cities, you’ll fly into Guayaquil (GYE), the closest international airport. Flights from Toronto typically connect through a major U.S. city or Bogotá. From Guayaquil, Ayampe is a scenic 3.5–4.5 hour coastal drive. Group transfers will be arranged and are included in the retreat for guests arriving on the 19th. You will need to spend the night of the 19th in Guayaquil at an airport hotel as the group transfer will leave for Ayampe at 9am on the 20th.

What to Expect Weather Wise

Late February in Ayampe, on Ecuador’s Pacific coast, offers warm tropical beach weather. Days are typically around 27–29 °C (80–84 °F), with balmy evenings near 23–24 °C (73–75 °F), and the ocean is beautifully warm at 26–27 °C (79–81 °F)—perfect for swimming and surfing. This time of year falls within the rainy season, which usually means short, refreshing tropical showers—often in the afternoon or evening—rather than all-day rain. Mornings are often sunny or lightly clouded, with lush green landscapes nourished by the season’s rainfall. Expect a mix of sunshine, warm ocean breezes, and the vibrant energy of the tropics. Packing light, breathable clothing, a light rain layer, and insect repellent will help you stay comfortable.

Expanding Your Capacity

This retreat is not about fixing yourself.
It is about expanding your capacity to be with yourself.

As you learn to witness your thoughts without becoming them, to feel emotions without being overwhelmed, and to move with the intelligence of your body rather than against it, something softens. Something steadies.

You begin to trust your ability to meet what arises, and you gain the wisdom that you have everything you need to meet the demands of your life.

You will leave feeling inspired – not because life has stopped changing, but because you have deepened your ability to remain present within it. With spaciousness, compassion for yourself and others, and greater resiliency.

From that steadiness, your capacity to hold space for others naturally grows.
